broadband basics

by interpreters @ 2006-05-07 - 06:22:25

Broadband means being on-line much longer (fact) and therefore your computer needs to be secure from spyware, viruses and trojans but don't buy anymore software yet as most internet providers offer some protection. If you're not sure give us a call.

When you've chosen your supplier make sure you are comfortable with the internet security you have or go here to read our security pages. You will need a good firewall although if you are using automatic updates with a licensed windows system this will give rudimentary protection. We rarely recommend any products but for a good, easy to use and manage firewall use the industry standard firewall ZoneAlarm(R) Internet Security Suite 6. Decide the options that best suit you broadband or dial-up, supplier, wifi or wired.

Hey!

I've got a techy question for you.

I've tried to install BT broadband on my PC but it won't do it because it needs the Windows 98 disc. However, after three house moves and a change of ownership, I haven't got the Windows 98 disc.

Now, do I a) try and find a copy of 98 on Ebay
b) Get XP - my bro has got a new XP update disc, will this do the trick or do I need to find the complete installation disc?
c) Try another broadband supplier?

I take it you've checked for a copy of the install files on your pc? They might be in a sub-directory like /windows/cabs or windows/i386 or windows/options depending on which version of 98.
If no luck there then there should be some install files somewhere on the internet which you could justifiably copy if you have(had) a bona-fie copy yourself. It's not really any different from buying them off ebay. Whatever you do you shouldn't have to be paying again.
Anyway somebody you know will have a disk somewhere.
XP - no, unless you've upgraded the hardware, cos there's a lot more overhead in terms of disk space and processor needs.
